Dorm rooms at UC Irvine filled over the weekend, a flurry of nesting and excitement before classes start and the business of learning begins.
The university was expecting nearly 5,500 first- and second-year students to move into its Mesa Court and Middle Earth housing communities between Saturday and Sunday.

Countin all of its housing options, the university provides nearly 17,800 beds to undergrad and graduate students. For the 2025-26 academic year, another 400 beds are expected to be ready following the completion of construction underway this year to expand its Mesa Court.
Instruction for this fall quarter starts Sept. 26.
