Irvine police have identified a knife-wielding man shot by Irvine police after he stabbed his mother to death.

Paul Parvea Montazer, 37, attacked his mother, Parvin Montazer, 72, on Green Tree Lane near Coral Tree Lane shortly before 3 p.m. on Thursday Aug. 8, police announced.

When police tried to stop Montazer from stabbing his mother, he advanced toward an officer and was shot, police officials said. Despite receiving aid from police, both the man and his mother died at the scene.

Police recovered a knife at the scene and are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the attack. It is not immediately known if there had been other altercations between the mother and son, but court records show Parvea Montazer had a criminal history in Las Vegas.

In his first offense in 2019, he pleaded no contest to misdemeanor domestic battery. He received a suspended jail sentence and completed six months of domestic violence counseling community service.

In 2022, he was charged with battery resulting in substantial bodily harm and resisting a public officer. He had agreed to plead guilty and was due to be sentenced in April, but decided to withdraw the plea when he and his attorney discovered it would be counted as a felony. The case was continued to this month.

Details of each case were not immediately available.

Parviz Montazer, Paul’s father and Parvin’s ex-husband, said in a brief interview he had not been in contact with either of them in years. He had no knowledge of his son’s criminal history other than what is public record, and did not know what had led to the attack.

Detectives are continuing to investigate, but do not believe there are any other suspects involved. Police request that anyone who may have witnessed the attack or has information contact Detective Brian Felling at 949-7247189 or email bfelling@cityofirvine.org.
