Lunar New Year celebrations are planned throughout Orange County as communities welcome the Year of the Snake on Jan. 29.

Marking the first new moon of the lunar calendar, the celebrations, also known in the Vietnamese community as Tết, will feature vibrant colors, lion and dragon dances, firecrackers and more.

Here are just some of the celebrations planned:

The Flower Street on Historic Main two-day event will be hosted again this year.

In its third year, it is modeled after the Nguyen Hue Flower Street festival in Vietnam, which features elaborate floral designs that attract more than 2 million visitors each Lunar New Year.

Along with “spectacular” displays of flowers decorating Garden Grove’s Main Street, the Jan. 25 and 26 event will feature lion dances, cultural performances, traditional children games and more. Activities start at 11 a.m. each day.

There will be an Áo Dài festival and contest for all ages on Jan. 25 and the Miss Asian Heritage Pageant will be held on Jan. 26. Information: vsasocal.org

The OC Public Libraries are also getting into the celebrations with activities such as themed crafts and storytimes and events planned at multiple branches.

A celebration with a lion dance is planned at 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 25 at the Library of the Canyons and performances by the Southern California Youth Dragon and Lion Dance Team at 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 25 at the Irvine University Park branch. Information: ocpl.org

The city of Santa Ana has its second annual Tết Festival planned Jan. 25 at its Centennial Park.

The 1 to 6 p.m. event, which is free to attend, will feature cultural performances, including lion and dragon dances, a kids zone, community resources and a fireworks show at 5:45 p.m. Information: santa-ana.org

On Jan. 28, the Nixon Presidential Library & Museum will host a Lunar New Year celebration starting at 5 p.m. There will be cultural performances and traditional Chinese foods. Cost is $45 general admission. Information: nixonfoundation.org

On Jan. 29, the Asian Garden Mall will help ring in the Year of the Snake with its always-popular firecracker celebration at noon. Information: asiangardenmall.com

The big Westminster Tết parade will be Feb. 1, with opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. The parade will set out at 9:30 a.m. down Bolsa Avenue from Magnolia Street, turn onto Bushard Street and end at Bishop Place.

The Union of Vietnamese Student Associations of Southern California, better known as UVSA, is moving its three-day Tết Festival back to Garden Grove where the event originated. It had been held at the county fairgrounds the last decade or so.

Now in its 42nd year, the festival will fill Garden Grove Park with cultural performances, entertainment, Vietnamese food, contests and more. The Cultural Village will again offer a replica of a traditional village in Vietnam and a look at the life and architecture of a village community.

The festival will be 4 to 10 p.m. on Jan. 31, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Feb. 1, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Feb. 2. Admission is $8. Information: tetfestival.org

The Irvine Company has celebrations planned at four of its shopping centers, starting Feb. 1 with a noon to 3 p.m. event at The Market Place in Tustin. The Woodbury Night Market from 4 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 2 will also feature Lunar New Year activities, as will a Garden of Good Fortune event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 8 at Fashion Island.
