Edison’s reigning state champion football team opened the season Friday by extending its success against foes from Fresno.

The Chargers scored the first 20 points against Clovis West and held on for a 20-13 victory at Huntington Beach High.

Last season, Edison claimed its first CIF State title with a 21-14 victory against Central of Fresno in the Division 1-AA final.

Sam Thomson sparked Edison with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Ayden DeGiacomo to punctuate the Chargers’ opening drive.

Early in the fourth, running back Sam Edmisten capped Edison’s scoring with a 40-yard touchdown run on a direct snap.

In between the touchdowns, Crue Bradshaw kicked two field goals for the Chargers, ranked No. 7 in Orange County.

On Thursday, Edison (1-0) plays host to No. 10 Yorba Linda (1-0) at Huntington Beach High.

In other games Friday:

Los Alamitos 34, Kapolei of Hawaii 31: Lenny Ibarra kicked two field goals in the final 34 seconds. including a game-winner from 20 yards, to lift the visiting Griffins (2-0) past the Hurricanes (2-1), ranked No. 6 in Hawaii by MaxPreps.

Ibarra tied the score 31-31 with a field goal with 34 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Los Alamitos then recovered a lateral at the Kapolei 1 with 11 seconds remaining, and no timeouts. After each team was called for a penalty before Ibarra kicked the winner.

The senior went 2 for 3 on field goals and made all four of his PATs.

Corona del Mar 41, Rancho Verde 6: Brady Annett completed 13 of 15 passes for 256 yards and five touchdowns and scored on a 49-yard touchdown run to lead the Sea Kings (1-0), who led 41-0 at halftime at Newport Harbor High.

Dorsett Stecker had six catches for 104 yards and two scores while JJ Haley added four receptions for 73 yards and two TDs.

Cypress 17, Cerritos 14: The visiting Centurions (1-0) edged the Dons to win their fourth consecutive season opener.

Mekaih Felix had four receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown to help pace Cypress’ offense.

Defensive end Tynoa Allen returned a fumble 60 yards for a touchdown to lead the Cypress defense.

Bryson Busbee added six lead tackles for Cypress.

Los Amigos 42, Garden Grove 36: Sophomore Myrtrell Smith tossed a 38-yard touchdown to junior Amarie Maddox with 23 seconds left to lift the Lobos (1-0) past the Argonauts (0-1) at Bolsa Grande High.

Kevin Centeno rushed for four touchdowns for Los Amigos.

Irvine 34, Northwood 14: Sina Saferzadeh three three touchdown passes and ran for another for Irvine in a win over crosstown rival Northwood.

Irvine (1-0) led 12-7 at halftime and scored three second half touchdowns. Cole Reidel had two touchdown receptions and Seamus Hoffman had two touchdowns. Saferzadeh ran for a 33-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

Jack Schultz returned a kickoff for a touchdown and had a receiving touchdown for Northwood (0-1). Northwood quarterback Dylan D’epifanio, a transfer from Crean Lutheran, threw for over 150 yards and had a touchdown pass.

Capistrano Valley 40, Barstow 21: Talon Spencer threw for 243 yards with five touchdowns for Capo Valley (1-0).

Colin Hooper had 120 yards receiving with two touchdowns and Izaiah Bennett had two touchdown receptions. Cade Epstein had a touchdown reception and Bradley Ruhl ran for a 39-yard touchdown.

Crean Lutheran 30, Mullen 14: Caden Jones threw for 288 yards with three touchdowns for Crean Lutheran in a home win over Mullen of Colorado.

Hawaii commit Dillon Booth had two touchdown receptions and Columbia commit Bryce Coleman had a touchdown reception. Caleb Bey added a rushing touchdown for Crean Lutheran (1-0).

Dana Hills 10, Desert Oasis 6: Dana Hills outlasted Desert Oasis of Nevada in a low-scoring game at Dana Hills High.

Carter Anderson threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to James Leicester to give Dana Hills (1-0) a 10-0 lead at halftime. Nicholas Newsom had an interception for the Dolphins and Devin Meyer Zu Drewer made a field goal in the first half.

Calvary Chapel 35, Woodbridge 0: Calvary Chapel’s defense forced three turnovers in a shutout win over Woodbridge.

Jett Rauch had an interception for Calvary Chapel (1-0) and Eli Sutherland returned a fumble 50 yards for a touchdown. Colin Wiles threw for over 180 yards and threw a touchdown pass to Noah Barthel. Wiles ran for a touchdown and Quinlan Russell ran for a touchdown.

Kayjahn Pitts was the leading rusher for Woodbridge (0-1).

St. Margaret’s 38, Arlington 6: Kai Letcher threw three touchdown passes for St. Margaret’s.

Sammy Grant-Lewis, Andrew Toubin and Jack Kleinhanzl had touchdown receptions for St. Margaret’s (1-0). Sam Orellana had two rushing touchdowns in the second half including a 71-yard run. Mason Allison made a 29-yard field goal for the Tartans.

Katella 21, Santa Ana Valley 7: Katella scored two touchdowns in the first quarter in a win over Santa Ana Valley.

Ryan Rodriguez threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Adam Haqi and Angel Garcia added a rushing touchdown for Katella (1-0).

Saddleback 26, Santiago 7: Andre Scott threw two touchdown passes and Fabian Bravo ran for a touchdown for Saddleback (1-0) in a home win over Santiago.

Andrew Alvarez returned an interception for a touchdown for the Roadrunners. Fabian Soria had both of the team’s touchdown receptions.

Mario Carbajal ran for a 34-yard touchdown for Santiago (0-1).

Buena Park 27, Don Lugo 13: Buena Park’s defense forced three turnovers and had five sacks in a win over Don Lugo.

Joshua Santillan returned a fumble for a touchdown. Isaac Razo and Qwantino Ornellas each had interceptions for Buena Park (1-0). Quarterback Kevin Garcia and Elias Chavez had rushing touchdowns. Damian Rodriguez, Bryant Hansbrough and Andrew Delgado had the Coyotes in receiving. Pedro Azpeitia made two field goals.

The win was the first as a head coach for Ramon Carmona.
